Chapter 16: every tradition · Christianity
Friends United Meeting
A pastoral (programmed) Friends meeting in a yearly meeting of Friends United Meeting, the association of Christ-centred Quakers whose historic statement of faith is the Richmond Declaration of 1887; most of its members today are in East Africa. Sunday's worship, prepared by the pastor, resembles a Protestant service, with hymns at the piano, prayer concerns, Scripture, and a prepared message, then settles into open worship, a long silence in which anyone may rise and speak as led. Friends keep no outward baptism or communion, holding that the baptism that matters is the Spirit's and that communion with Christ is inward. The pastor, often a recorded minister and often part-time, is called by the meeting and serves it without governing it: business is decided in the monthly meeting for business by the sense of the meeting, without a vote, under its clerk. Friends affirm rather than swear, hold that war is incompatible with Christ's teaching, and support those who refuse to fight. The yearly meetings set their own standards, and several have left Friends United Meeting or divided over theology and sexuality.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 10:30 am | Pastoral meeting for worship | the pastor | expected |

- Leader: a pastor. With none (a vacancy, or no one hired), the meeting holds a Meeting for worship in place of its own, led by the laity, which costs everyone at it 0.04; on sabbatical a supply pastor stands in ($800 a month).
- Communion: not kept.
Rites
- Meeting for Business (monthly, +0.01 to those there): Each month Friends hold a meeting for worship with attention to business: the clerk brings matters before the meeting, and Friends wait together for a sense of the meeting rather than voting.
- Recording of Ministers (on request, +0.02 to those there): When a monthly meeting recognizes a gift for ministry in a Friend, and they have finished a course of study, the yearly meeting records them as a minister.
- Clearness Committee (on request, +0.02 to those there, asked for 0.05 times a year by a household, 90 minutes): A few trusted Friends meet with someone facing a decision or a leading, asking gentle questions and waiting in silence to help them find clarity, without giving advice.
- Marriage Under the Care of the Meeting (on request, +0.025 to those there): After a clearness committee, the couple marries in a special meeting for worship: they rise and make their promises to each other with no officiant, and everyone present signs the marriage certificate.
- Memorial Meeting (on request, +0.02 to those there): A meeting for worship in thanksgiving for the life of someone who has died, in which those gathered rise out of the silence to share memories of them.
- Child Dedication (per birth, +0.02 to those there): Parents bring their baby to the front, promise to raise the child in the faith, and the pastor prays a blessing over the family while the meeting promises to support them.
Joining
- No baptism: a content regular is received after about 8 weeks.
- Joining age: 16.
- Kinds of belonging: members (votes, may hold office); attenders; received by a vote of the members.
- What it means: being baptized, confirmed, or received is worth +0.1 to the person, +0.05 to family there, and +0.03 to everyone else at the service. It roots them: a rooted household drifts away only 0.6 times as often, and if it does fall away, it has a 25% chance of coming home each Christmas Eve and Easter for ten years.
Giving, and what goes up
How its people give and what else comes in, as Money explains it for every faith.
- How it's given: the offering, by a plate passed at each main service, and giving online. A visiting household puts $5 to $25 in the plate. Those who give online give whether or not they come (8% more a month).
- Fundraisers: only the modest ones (below).
- Owed above: Yearly meeting apportionment, 8% of what it takes in, to the Yearly Meeting; not kept, it costs the wider body's regard.

- How the pastor comes: advertised and called: the members decide by consensus, consulting the Yearly Meeting.
- Paid: part time, alongside other work (a bivocational leader); housed or given an allowance, as you set.

- Tenure: settled for about 5 years, then may be called elsewhere.
- Ranks: Recorded minister; a candidate holds one by skill, and rises with the years.
- Staff it can hire or name (see Staff and volunteers):
- Bivocational pastor ($22,000–$38,000; cares for 75)
- Associate pastor ($42,000–$62,000 + $15,000 benefits, full time; cares for 100 more)
- Choir director / organist / pianist ($15,000–$35,000; leads the music (up to +0.06))
- Caretaker ($18,000–$30,000; slows the building's wear)
- Meeting secretary ($20,000–$35,000; runs the office (+50 to the leader's reach, once))
- Youth director ($20,000–$40,000; up to +0.08 for households with young people)

- New construction: The members decide by consensus.
- Calling a leader: The members decide by consensus, consulting the Yearly Meeting.
- Who votes: members, 16 and over.
